Quiet Living, Close Looking: the life and work of an unsung artist of the North
Muriel E. Newton White
Newton-White's drawings in charcoal, colored pencil, and ink reveal a deep connection to nature.
“Muriel E. Newton White - Quiet Living, Close Looking: the life and work of an unsung artist of the North” features oil paintings from the collection of the Government of Ontario and the collection of the Temiskaming Art Gallery. Over the years she filled countless pages with beautiful drawings of Northern scenes. In charcoal, coloured pencil, and ink – each drawing is delightful.
In 1949, at the age of 15 – and after having been home-schooled her entire life - Muriel E. Newton-White earned a scholarship to the Ontario College of Art in Toronto - now OCAD University. Here she earned her Bachelor of Fine Art, instructed by Franklin Carmichael, Yulia Biriukova, a Russian-born Canadian painter known for her portraits of friends A.Y. Jackson and J.E.H. Macdonald, and Yvonne McKague Housser - founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters in 1933.
