Pastorale

Dominic Lafontaine

Dominic Lafontaine, an Algonquin multimedia artist, blends traditional art with new media to explore identity and belonging

Dominic Lafontaine is an Algonquin multimedia artist, poet and musician. His audacious, humourous and often absurd artworks explore the very notions of cultural identity, meaning and belonging. A graduate of Visual Arts at Ottawa University, he synthesizes his knowledge of traditional art forms with new media in order to redefine the visual language of contemporary native art. His motto: «Research, remix and repeat!»

Pastorale is a voyage deep into the Uncanny Valley, an unsettling place where things seem similar and yet foreign, beautiful yet frightening. By mixing the conventions of traditional French Pastorale painting with Artificial Intelligence visual generators, the artist creates a surreal and humorous experience that seeks to upturn the notions of the rural idyll.
